Exploring a new way of lighting
Our Experience at the Erco Supplier Event
On 31 October our team attended the Erco Experience, a supplier event designed to introduce Interior Designers, Architects and Lighting Engineers to Erco’s lighting philosophy and product range. The day included a walkthrough of the Metro installation to see their lighting approach in situ, followed by a presentation at the Erco Experience Centre.
Why We Attended
The event focused on Erco’s distinctive approach to lighting design, particularly their AAA methodology, which rethinks how spaces are lit by prioritising architecture, activity and atmosphere rather than relying on a standard downlight grid. While the session leaned toward commercial applications, we saw strong potential for translating these ideas into our residential work.
Key Learnings
The biggest takeaway was that lighting does not need to follow a predictable grid to be effective. Erco demonstrated how reflective light, focal illumination and carefully considered beam angles can completely change the feel of a room. This softer, more intentional style of lighting supports ambience, functionality and architectural expression, without harsh glare.
Erco’s AAA approach particularly stood out:
Architecture – Highlight architectural features such as stone walls or textured surfaces using precise wall washing.
Activity – Illuminate based on how the space is used, for example targeted lighting over a kitchen bench.
Atmosphere – Layer lighting to create drama, variation and mood, supported by appropriate dimming options.
How This Informs Our Design Work
This session gave our team a fresh perspective on lighting, an area that can transform a space more than almost any other design element. As a respected European lighting supplier, Erco’s methodology offers an exciting framework we are keen to apply in upcoming projects. We are especially interested in exploring how these principles can elevate residential environments to feel warmer, richer and more thoughtfully crafted.
We look forward to continuing to integrate innovative lighting strategies into our design process.
