BARKLY HOMESTEAD
Barkly Homestead, ‘the first and last hotel’ in the Northern Territory, is one of the most isolated pubs in Australia. A truck stop, waterhole for local farms, caravan park and accomodation, a diverse complex with the centrepiece the homestead building that this budget conscious renovation reinvigorates and renews ready for the next 50 years.

The existing building is amplified with a traditional verandah detailed as a modern interpretation of the homestead vernacular. The bowser roof form is balanced by a new complementary roof extending the dining space. Adjacent to the indoor dining is an outdoor undercover beer garden with a contemporary structure, the traditional rhythm maintained with colonnades flanking to provide sun protection and habitable landscaped threshold spaces.
As a truck stop with a predominance of cattle trucks the diagonal brace framing language of these trucks is echoed throughout the design with an actual carrier retrofitted and upgraded as a planting frame with terraced seating creating a fence and outpost at the end of the buildings journey. The first and last space at the !irst and last hotel.
