GRUIDAE
A dynamic sculptural form inspired by the name of the property ‘Gruidae’ or Crane defines the shape of the floating cantilevered grandstand roof using the dynamic motion of a bird in flight wings spread as the iconic form. The triangular form provides the inherent strength to allow the roof to float to a point reinforcing the central axis toward the view.

The distant glimpses of the iconic Carnarvon Range helps inform the design of the roof with the resultant folded form providing protection from the afternoon Western Sun with the weathering steel perforated sheets reflecting the red colours of the outback providing a robust timeless low maintenance appearance.
Shade provides a magnet for all in the outback with the dappled protective cool shade beneath a Eucalyptus providing the inspiration for the materiality of the design. A sandwich of perforated metal and polycarbonate roofing provides a cool open ventilated space beneath the floating roof with robust inexpensive materials forming sunken concrete steps creating ‘mass’ to maintain a naturally temperate space.
